This is an amazing fact that I just learned: There is an outpost of Tibetan Buddhism on the Caspian shore. It is Kalmykia, a republic of the Russian Federation with 292,410 inhabitants speaking a Mongolic language. There must be an intriging tale of Völkerwanderung (wandering of the peoples) behind this fact.
(I have previously known that Tuva, bordering Mongolia, with a population of 305,510, is Tibetan Buddhist in its culture.)
